On this edition of The Ex Terra Podcast, Tom Patton talks with Divya Panchanathan, Business Development Manager for Material Science Research and Manufacturing in Space for Axiom Space, about the AX-1 mission and other projects.
Axiom Space is planning to launch the first fully private mission to the International Space Station next February as they prepare to build a private space station over the next 4 to 5 years. Divya gives us an insider's view of the upcoming Ax-1 mission, as well as progress on the Axiom station.
Divya's background includes experimental work in interfacial engineering, surface science, filtration, aerosol science, catalytic materials, micro/nanofabrication, nanoparticle/polymer coatings, and test system development, and interdisciplinary projects including air filtration for weld fumes, produced water treatment for oil recovery, and drag reduction coatings for marine vessels.
At Axiom Space, she is seeking to create new pathways for innovation in material science by enabling discovery and commercialization of novel products in microgravity.
NASA and Axiom Space just announced that the Ax-2 mission to the ISS has been authorized. Ax-2 will launch from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida for a mission of no more than 14 days docked to the space station. NASA and Axiom will negotiate in-orbit activities for the private astronauts to conduct in coordination with space station crew members and flight controllers on the ground. The Ax-2 mission concept includes scientific research and outreach activities.
In a programming note, this will be Ex Terra's final podcast for 2021. We hope you all enjoy the rest of the holiday season, and we will return on January 6th to talk with Nino Marcantoio, founder and Deputy Director of the Defense Technology Innovation Program.
