The inauguration was celebrated with a reception welcoming of Greece’s Minister of Digital Governance, Dimitris Papastergiou, along with senior dignitaries from ESA, the Secretary General of Telecommunications and Posts Prof. Konstantinos Karantzalos, the Hellenic Space Center, and the Hellenic Fire Service. Attendees also toured the new facilities and met with members of OroraTech's growing Greek team.
“Greece is leading the way in adopting next-generation technology to address the climate crisis,” said Minister of Digital Governance Dimitris Papastergiou. “When I came to the Ministry I took the initiative of changing the whole space policy of Greece. We decided to do something new, with ESA’s support, and today thanks to OroraTech, among the other companies implementing the national space program,we are finally ready to launch our satellites, giving our emergency services an unprecedented ability to detect and respond to wildfires in real time, protecting lives, forests, and communities across our nation.”
OroraTech was awarded a €20 million (≈$23.4 million) development contract in 2024 to build and launch Greece’s first national wildfire monitoring system. The system includes four dedicated thermal imaging satellites and a robust data processing and alerting infrastructure. As part of that mission, OroraTech committed to local hiring, workforce training, and the establishment of a permanent operational presence in Athens.
“By investing in local infrastructure and talent, we are not only supporting our wildfire constellation program but building a long-term foundation for Earth Observation innovation in Greece,” said Axel Roenneke, Chief Commercial Officer of OroraTech. “We are proud to build in Greece a center of excellence for thermal satellite sensing that will be the gateway for our growth in the region.”
Since the start of the project, OroraTech has continuously expanded its team in Greece, hiring software engineers, data scientists, and engineering specialists. The new headquarters serves as a hub for these growing operations and as a base for future technology collaborations with Greek universities, research institutions, and industry partners. OroraTech plans further investment in Greece in the coming years, reinforcing its role as a key partner in Europe’s environmental resilience and digital transformation.
