KASA Signs Launch Contract with SpaceX
Cheollian 3 Satellite to be Launched in the Second Half of 2027
The Korea AeroSpace Administration (KASA) has signed a launch service contract with SpaceX for the launch of the GEOstationary KOrea Multi-Purpose SATellite 3 (Cheollian 3). This satellite is currently being developed to provide public satellite communication services for disaster and safety response.
"We intend to advance the technology of geostationary satellites through the development of the GEOstationary KOrea Multi-Purpose SATellite 3.”
Kim Jin-Hee, KASA
Cheollian 3 is targeted to be launched in the second half of 2027 from Florida to succeed the communication mission of Cheollian 1 (launched in June 2010) and will provide services for disaster and emergency preparedness and public satellite communications. It will be located at 128.2 degrees in the equatorial sky to provide communication missions.
In addition, it will carry out tasks such as stably securing information for flood disasters, supporting emergency communication in areas where the ground network has collapsed, maritime rescue and maritime defense activities of the coast guard, and supporting the safe operation of aircraft.
Based on the technology secured by the development of Cheollian 1 and 2, Chollian 3 is expected to lay the foundation for independent development of geostationary communication satellites, respond to public demand, and enhance the national status.
"We intend to advance the technology of geostationary satellites through the development of the GEOstationary KOrea Multi-Purpose SATellite 3, which will operate in a geostationary orbit, and establish a safe foundation for Korea by providing disaster and safety response services through public satellite communication," said Kim Jin-Hee, Director General of the Satellite Directorate at KASA "KASA will continuously support the development of Cheollian 3."
