Schwartz will serve as Chief of the Space Bureau. Returning to the FCC now after time in the private sector, Jay previously served as FCC Chairman Ajit Pai’s Wireline Advisor. Before joining then-Chairman Pai’s team in 2017, Jay had held positions in the Wireline Competition Bureau, Wireless Telecommunications Bureau, and the Office of Strategic Planning. He holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Pittsburgh and an undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering from Texas A&M University.
The FCC Space Bureau plays a key role in advancing the Commission’s Space Innovation Agenda. It promotes a competitive and innovative global communications marketplace by leading policy and licensing matters related to satellite and space-based communications and activities.
In a statement, Tom Stroup, president of the Satellite Industry Association congratulated Schwartz on his new role. “Throughout his career, Mr. Schwarz has recognized the importance of broadband connectivity and bridging the digital divide," Stroup said. "As the satellite industry continues to grow at an unprecedented rate, SIA and its members look forward to working with him, the Bureau and the entire Commission to extend the availability of satellite connectivity and all space-based services – while helping ensure America’s continued leadership role in the global space economy.”
